The origin of this form of cancer is in the mouth when healthy cells transform into cancerous cells and their abnormal growth affects the lips, tongue, gums or cheeks from inside. Mouth Cancer has three basic types:

* Salivary Gland - affecting the salivary gland.
* Melanoma - affects the skin pigment cells on lips or inside the mouth.
* Lymphoma - affects the lymph tissue near the tonsils and tongue.

Mouth Cancer is gradually taking on gigantic leaps in the common types of cancer due to increased use of tobacco and its products. In Asian countries chewing of "Paan", "Gutka" and tobacco is another major cause for mouth cancer. Major contributors towards Mouth Cancer generally are:

* Weak immune system.
* Chewing of tobacco and tobacco products.
* Continued exposure to UV rays of the sun.
* Smoking - any type.
* Cancer already existing in head or neck.
* Excessive alcohol consumption along with smoking.

Symptoms associated with mouth cancer may come up in the following manner:

* Appearance of ulcers on the lips or inside the mouth which does not heal with normal medication.
* Bad breath from mouth.
* White or red colored patches appearing inside the mouth.
* Loosening of teeth due to gums getting affected.
* Any unexplained lump forming on the tongue, in the general area of the neck or more prominently on the lips.
* Patient complains of soreness inside the mouth area or in the throat.
* Signs of bleeding from the mouth - maybe ulcer related or affected gums.
* Periodic numbness within the area of the mouth.

As always with any cancer, early detection is helpful in containing the spread. The dentist is the best guide who can diagnose and warn the patient in such cases.
